About Pokhar

Our Story

Pokhar was born from a simple belief — clothing should evolve with you.

Pokhar is a contemporary modular clothing label founded by Madhurika Singh, a textile designer and graduate of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

Our relationship with clothing begins with textiles — with the way a fabric feels, falls and responds to the body, and with the possibilities that thoughtful construction can create.

We started Pokhar with one question:

What if one garment could become more than one thing?

This question led us towards modular design — garments that can be detached, reconfigured, layered and transformed. We believe clothing should not be confined to a single silhouette or a predetermined way of wearing it. It should leave room for interpretation, experimentation and individuality.

THE STORY OF POKHAR

Pokhar is built around the idea of adaptability.

Our garments are designed to shift with the wearer — changing in form, function and expression through considered modular elements. Sleeves, collars, pockets and other components become opportunities to transform a piece rather than simply decorate it.

For us, modularity is not a passing trend or a visual gimmick. It is a way of thinking about how we buy, wear and keep clothing.

We believe in creating fewer, better pieces that can work harder within a wardrobe — pieces that can move between occasions, moods and ways of dressing while retaining their own identity.

To create clothing that gives you more possibilities, without asking you to own more.

WE STARTED POKHAR WITH ONE GOAL

To make clothing more adaptable, personal and enduring.

We want every Pokhar garment to give the wearer the freedom to decide how it looks, how it functions and how it becomes their own.

OUR CLOTHING IS DESIGNED TO EVOLVE

A Pokhar garment is never meant to have just one identity.

Through modular construction, a single piece can be worn, altered, layered, detached and reinterpreted in different ways.

The intention is simple: more versatility from fewer pieces.

Our design approach brings together textile, construction, functionality and contemporary aesthetics, creating garments that feel considered without feeling complicated.

THE IDEA BEHIND POKHAR

The name Pokhar comes from the names of the founder's parents — “Po” from Poonam and “khar” from Shekhar.

In many Indian languages, Pokhar refers to a serene pond. A pond is still at its centre, yet constantly changing with what surrounds it. It is also a place where the lotus grows — a quiet symbol of grace, growth and new beginnings.

For us, Pokhar represents that same space of possibility — a place where ideas gather, shift and take shape.

FOUNDER SPEAK

Madhurika Singh

Founder & Textile Designer

“I have always been interested in what happens when you look at clothing beyond its finished form — the fabric, the construction, the possibilities within it.*

Pokhar came from that curiosity. I wanted to explore whether a garment could be designed to change with the person wearing it, rather than asking the wearer to change around the garment.

For me, modularity is ultimately about freedom — having more ways to wear, style and experience a piece, while being more intentional about what we choose to keep in our wardrobes.”

MORE THAN A GARMENT

We believe good design should have a reason behind it.

Every Pokhar piece is developed with versatility, comfort, longevity and purposeful construction in mind. Our approach is to create garments that remain relevant beyond a single season and allow the wearer to continually discover new ways of wearing them.

Wear it differently. Make it yours. Let it evolve.
